In the ensuing fight, it was impaled by a boar spear but wrenched the weapon free. It was struck repeatedly with a billhook and slashed with a sword, recoiling each time. The monster displayed a terrifying mimicry, perfectly imitating a man's scream. It lunged to seize Sanson, taking his head and shoulders into its mouth and attempting to swallow him whole. It fought with vicious cunning, using the hand at the end of its tail to grab at Thomas's face and leg, and it managed to puncture Thomas in the groin with one of its spines. Ultimately, Thomas drove his sword through its neck and pushed toward where he hoped its heart lay. The creature bit down, taking Thomas's head into its mouth and pulling him underwater before shuddering, vomiting him out, and falling still, presumably dead.

It attacked their raft, webbed and killed Guillaume, taking his head before retreating to the deeper river channel to drag its prizes south toward the sea.
