The seigneur's keep was a fortified residence, its gate equipped with a bell for summoning attention. When Thomas and his companions arrived seeking aid against the river monster, a herald refused them, claiming men-at-arms were still inside. In his frustration, Thomas rang the bell so violently he tore the cord and dislodged the bell itself.
