Mathilde

Mathilde was a plague-stricken woman from St. Martin-le-Preux whose husband and children had died of the same sickness. In a feverish delirium, she stumbled to the riverbank, declared a marriage to the unconscious Thomas, and died draped across his back.

Mathilde was a woman from St. Martin-le-Preux who lost her husband and children to the plague. She later became the leader of the survivor encampment called St. Lazarus, a community of those who had survived the sickness.

Story so far

Mathilde first appeared on the road, feverish and lost, with the painful signs of plague upon her. After her husband and children died and her sister refused her, she stumbled to a river where she encountered the wounded Thomas. In her delirium, she performed a strange, desperate marriage ritual over him, kissing him and draping her body across his back before she died. Later, alive and leading the St. Lazarus encampment, she met Thomas again. Her cheeks were red and her manner stern as she explained the camp's rules, offered food for work, and gave the travelers provisions with a warning. She rebuked God by speaking her daughters' names and sent them off with a callused wave, having forged a harsh new life from shared survival.
