Jehan de Rouen

Jehan de Rouen was a woodcarver living with his wife Annette above his shop in Paris, where he sold wooden religious statues. A Norman by origin, he heard Delphine singing a Norman song from his window and invited the three travelers—Thomas, Delphine, and Père Raoul—to stay, sharing food and apple brandy. He warned them of the deadly stone creatures that knocked at night. A man of routine and caution, he normally went to market alone, wearing a cloth about his face, but went with the group when Delphine insisted. At the market, he guided them, pulling Thomas away from a fishmonger who used pig's blood and haggling successfully for a shoulder of pork. Over dinner, he spoke grimly of the city's justice. Later, when stone creatures were sensed nearby, he stood guard with a mallet, pushing his wife back and warning Thomas not to answer a false cry at the door. When a stone creature in the form of the Virgin Mary attacked, he fought bravely, knocking a point from its crown with his mallet, but was ultimately gored against the wall and killed as his workshop burned.
