The barber-surgeon was a medical practitioner who attended the wounded after the Battle of Crécy. He first helped Thomas and his lord dismount, then extracted an arrow from Thomas's face, cutting his mouth and tongue. He was later summoned by the king but continued Thomas's treatment in Amiens, cleaning the wound and stitching it closed.
