The Florentines were merchants who had grown rich selling bright red wool from Florence. At the market, they operated the largest and most beautiful stall, where they wore plague masks resembling awful birds and used sticks to display cloth, enforcing boundaries with stacks of bricks and requiring customers to cleanse their money in a bowl of water.
