The Brotherhood of St. Martin’s Arse was a band of armed farmers who hid in the woods to frighten strangers during the plague, later terrorizing their own town. They wore terrifying masks of reeds, clay, feathers, and teeth to avoid eye contact, drank heavily at the widow’s alehouse, and were the first to die after she served them beer mixed with her infected blood.
