Nemours

Nemours was a fortified town whose gates were barred to outsiders. A gaunt guard on its parapet threatened to shoot anyone who approached, and he grimly suggested that travelers should wait for one of their own to starve and then eat them, calling this 'Gigot de Nemours.' The town was said to be full of scarecrows and cannibals.
