The older oarsman was a thief and a pirate, missing an ear, who crewed the raft down the Saône. He was a skilled cornemuse player and initially supported looting cargo, but he considered murdering passengers to be a breach of oath. He was killed by Guillaume while creeping toward Thomas with a drawn dagger.
