Provence is a region in southern France, lying along the lower Rhône River. The travelers, having survived an attack by monstrous creatures in the river, finally reached its shore in a fallow field, marking their entry into this land.
Provence was the southern French region Thomas and Delphine were approaching. It was characterized by a drier, rockier, and warmer landscape than the lands to the north, under a famously vivid blue sky, and dotted with plane trees whose bark peeled like linen.
