Isnard was a papal guard in Avignon. He had made fast friends with Delphine while she was disguised as a page.

He was a polyglot, speaking French, Italian, and Provençal, and was persuaded to help her enter the house by the gift of an ivory comb, having privately believed he saw an angel the night before.

Isnard was a multilingual figure at Elysium House, known for his ability to translate between French, Italian, and Provençal. He befriended Delphine when she served as a page and, after the battle remembered as an earthquake, helped lift Thomas from a cart of bodies. Isnard believed he had seen an army of angels in the sky, which he called the most beautiful yet awful things, and he crossed himself in reverence.
