The stable boy was a big lad who worked at the cardinal's house in Villeneuve. On the night of the cardinal's visitation, he was found terrified in the stable, gripping a pitchfork and refusing to go near the house after witnessing something. He warned Robert Hanicotte to flee and defiantly claimed he knew where to find the Devil.
