Victor's younger brother, now sixteen, full of activity and spirit; he wishes to be a true Swiss and enter foreign military service (a plan his father Alphonse dislikes for taking him to a distant country), spends his time outdoors climbing hills or rowing on the lake, and views study as an odious fetter, risking becoming an idler unless allowed to pursue his chosen profession.

He was playing with William when the boy disappeared, believing at first William had run off to hide, searched for him in vain, later returned to the family during the fuller search, and on Victor's arrival related that Justine Moritz had been discovered as the suspected murderer, describing the evidence against her and expressing that this discovery completes the family's misery.
