The stocky priest was a cow-eyed man among the farmers from Chanson-des-Anges who sought to reclaim their stolen Virgin statue. He threatened Père Matthieu with a candlestick and advanced toward the cart, but broke down in blubbering tears when the girl confronted him about a presence at his elbow. He was later killed in the battle at Rochelle-la-Blanche by the same brick that killed the boy Perrin.
