Sournois was the head of the new 'nether wing' dungeon in the papal palace, appointed by the changed Pope Clement. He oversaw the torture of the Comte d'Évreux, whom he identified as a Norman count and future king of Navarre, and initially refused the doctor's forged writ before fetching a handcart for the prisoner's release.
