Duchess
The Duchess is someone the White Rabbit is afraid of keeping waiting.
The Duchess was sitting in a smoky kitchen nursing a baby, sneezing from the pepper, and arguing with Alice about cats and the world's speed. She sang a violent lullaby to the baby before flinging it at Alice and then hurried out to get ready to play croquet with the Queen.
The Duchess is under sentence of execution and was in prison for having boxed the Queen's ears.
The Duchess, in a pleasant temper but with an uncomfortably sharp chin, walked with Alice, finding a moral in everything and making Alice a present of everything she'd said. When the Queen appeared and warned that either she or her head must be off, the Duchess took her choice and was gone in a moment.
