Alice

Alice, who has a sister and a cat named Dinah, followed a waistcoat-wearing White Rabbit down a rabbit-hole after growing bored. After falling down a deep shaft, she pursued the Rabbit through a long hall of locked doors, found a tiny golden key that opened a small door to a lovely garden, but was too large to enter. She drank from a bottle labelled 'DRINK ME' and shrank to ten inches tall, forgot the key, and then ate a cake marked 'EAT ME'.

Alice grew to over nine feet tall after eating the cake, took the key, but cried and created a pool of tears. After shrinking with the White Rabbit's fan, she fell into the pool, swam, and led a party of creatures to shore, wondering if she had changed.

Alice, having led the creatures ashore, talked familiarly with them and argued with the Lory about age. After the Mouse's failed attempt to dry them, she participated in the Dodo's Caucus-race, distributed comfits as prizes, and received a thimble. She offended the Mouse by inattention and mentioning her cat Dinah's prowess, causing the birds to leave, after which she cried alone, hearing footsteps.

Alice, after participating in the Caucus-race and offending the Mouse, was mistaken by the White Rabbit for his housemaid Mary Ann and sent to fetch his fan and gloves. Entering his house, she drank from an unlabeled bottle and grew enormous, trapping herself in the room until pebbles turned into cakes; eating one shrank her, allowing escape into a wood where she encountered an enormous puppy and then a large blue caterpillar on a mushroom.

Alice, now three inches high, met the Caterpillar, who questioned her identity and told her the mushroom's sides could change her size. After experimenting with the pieces, her neck grew so long a Pigeon mistook her for a serpent; after convincing it she was a girl, she used the mushroom to return to her usual height and then shrink to nine inches before approaching a small house.

Alice, having adjusted her height with the mushroom, observed two footmen deliver an invitation from the Queen to the Duchess. She entered the Duchess's chaotic kitchen, where she was given a baby that turned into a pig, and then met the Cheshire Cat, who directed her toward the mad Hatter and March Hare. After the Cat vanished, she nibbled more mushroom to grow taller and approached the March Hare's house.

Alice joined a mad tea-party under a tree, enduring a nonsensical conversation with the Hatter, March Hare, and Dormouse before leaving in disgust. She then found a door in a tree that led her back to the long hall, where she used the golden key and nibbled the mushroom to shrink to a foot high, finally entering the beautiful garden.

Alice entered the garden and saw three gardeners painting white roses red. When the Queen of Hearts arrived and threatened to behead her, Alice stood up to the Queen, hid the gardeners in a flower-pot, and joined a chaotic croquet game. During the game, she conversed with the Cheshire Cat and, when the Queen ordered its execution, suggested asking the Duchess, who was in prison for boxing the Queen's ears.

Alice walked with the Duchess, who found morals in everything, until the Queen interrupted and threatened the Duchess, who fled. Alice then followed the Queen back to the chaotic croquet game, where she felt unhappy at the many executions, and was later taken by the Gryphon to meet the Mock Turtle. She listened as the Mock Turtle began describing his unusual education in the sea, asking many questions about his subjects and masters.

Alice walked with the Duchess, who found morals in everything, until the Queen interrupted and threatened the Duchess, who fled. Alice then followed the Queen back to the chaotic croquet game, where she felt unhappy at the many executions, and was later taken by the Gryphon to meet the Mock Turtle. She listened as the Mock Turtle and Gryphon described and demonstrated the Lobster Quadrille, engaged in confusing conversations about whiting and porpoises, and recounted some of her adventures and recited distorted poems, before being hurried away by the Gryphon when a cry announced the trial was beginning.

Alice, after being hurried to the court of justice by the Gryphon, observed the trial of the Knave of Hearts. She grew larger again, interacted with jurors and the Dormouse, and was surprised when the White Rabbit called her name as the next witness.

Alice, now grown very large, accidentally upset the jury-box at the trial and helped right the jurors. She repeatedly denied knowing anything about the case, argued with the King about Rule Forty-two, and interrupted the proceedings to declare the evidence meaningless. When the Queen demanded sentence before verdict, Alice loudly objected, called the court a pack of cards, and then suddenly awoke on the riverbank with her sister, to whom she recounted her dream before running off to tea.
